Lumiar Cité, Lisboa
The sculpture evokes colonial architecture in Lubumbashi (1950s), the capital of Katanga, a province rich in minerals.
It interacts with the architectural features of Lumiar Cité and is used as the screen for two videos:
– a performance by two singers presenting the traditional song “Je vais entrer dans la mine”. The lyrics recall a young man writing to his mother about his fears of dying whilst being forced to go underground. In the second,
the Park Hotel band interpret “Indépendance Cha Cha”, an emblematic anthem of the African independence of the 1960s, written by Joseph Kabasele, in Brussels, on the night the Belgian and Congolese delegations reached an agreement regarding the date of independence.
