A frieze of paintings and drawings combined with sculptures — intertwines biographies of South African singer Miriam Makeba and US fugitive George Wright/Jorge dos Santos with Ferreira’s own. Combined with the artist’s enlarged line drawings, the visual perspectives of the mural fragments are drawn from an existing mural, painted by Ferreira with a collective of artists for Community House in Salt River, Cape Town, in 1986. The tower, which connects all items, is a symbol Ferreira has previously used to evoke notions of the public and the political. The sculpture refers to the “Pan American Unity Mural” by Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. The installation also includes a phantasmagorical sculptural version of the artists’ modernist family home in colonial Mozambique.
